Empowering Businesses with Solar Energy with the NEM NOVA Program

Introducing the NEM NOVA Program for commercial and industrial sectors.

In the realm of sustainable energy adoption, Malaysia has been making significant strides through its Net Energy Metering (NEM) Scheme. Executed by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC), regulated by the Energy Commission (EC), and implemented by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, the NEM Scheme has been a driving force in promoting solar energy utilisation across the nation.

NEM's Evolution: From Inception to NEM 3.0

The NEM Scheme was first introduced in 2016 with the goal of accelerating the adoption of solar energy in Malaysia. However, it wasn't until 2019 that the program gained substantial traction. A pivotal moment arrived in November 2020 when the 500MW allocation under NEM 2.0 was eagerly claimed by various sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, and agriculture. As NEM 2.0 reached its zenith, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) signalled the launch of NEM 3.0, or Net Energy Metering 3.0.

Unlocking the Potential of NEM NOVA for Commercial and Industrial Sectors

Central to NEM 3.0 is the NEM NOVA Program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower Malaysia's commercial and industrial sectors through solar energy. This programme offers a host of benefits to businesses:

  1. Self-Consumption of Solar Energy: With NEM NOVA, businesses can harness the electricity generated by their solar PV systems for their own use. This enables significant cost savings by reducing reliance on the conventional grid.

  2. Selling Excess Electricity: The programme allows participants to sell surplus electricity generated by their solar PV systems back to the grid at market rates or the System Marginal Price (SMP). The electricity sold is converted into credits, which are reflected in the following month's electricity bill.

  3. Efficient Electricity Distribution: NEM NOVA goes a step further by enabling participants to offset excess electricity generated by their solar PV systems through virtual aggregation. This means that surplus energy can be distributed to up to three different electricity bill accounts under the same name, optimising energy utilisation and cost reduction.

The NEM NOVA Program is poised to revolutionise the way businesses in Malaysia approach energy consumption. By embracing solar energy, commercial and industrial enterprises can not only enhance their environmental credentials but also significantly reduce operational costs, making them more competitive in today's dynamic market.

As NEM 3.0 unfolds, the NEM NOVA Program stands as a testament to Malaysia's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. It offers businesses a golden opportunity to embrace solar power, reduce their carbon footprint, and bolster their financial bottom line simultaneously. With the future looking brighter than ever, Malaysia's commercial and industrial sectors are set to lead the charge towards a greener and more prosperous tomorrow.
